1978 W123 OM617 5 cylinder Diesel 300D Mercedes-BenzI bought this car because a friend of mine owned it about 5 years ago. It was a very nice car that had AC, heat and was a daily driver. He sold it to a local guy and again it was a daily driver. I heard that he wanted to sell it because he couldn’t get it to start. I assumed that it just needed the valves adjusted, fuel filters changed and normal maintenance stuff. I did what I could do and still it will not start. I did a compression check and found that my average compression was around 200 PSI and I’m told that’s too low.The inside of the engine looks very clean.Timing chain is good and timing is correct.Valves are set and are correct.Good fuel, new fuel filters, new manual primer pump.So I am done with it. Also, I killed the battery (not included) and I may have hurt the starter trying to start it because the Bendex turns but won’t engage (could be because the battery was dying). I was going to just replace the engine with a known good one but my frustration won’t let me do it. Very disappointed, I had plans for this to be my daily driver.The only rust I have found is in the trunk and on the trunk lid channel (see pics). Paint is old I don’t think it’s original. The hood, roof and deck lid are the worst. Chrome side trim is loose in two places, just need the little red clips replaced. The lights, flashers, gauges work and so does the Beckner radio. The front tires look new. The sunroof is 100% manual but I never opened it. It has all of the glove box manuals, emergency kit and even the original title from 1978. I never drove the car so can only answer questions based on what I see. I would say that the odometer is broke so I don’t know the true mileage. I know it’s a good car and was loved for many years. Georgia does not have titles on older vehicles but the car will come with everything you will need to title and register where you live. I have an open signed bill of sale and registration from the lady I bought it from.I have plenty of pics! Let me know what you want to see.
